We know that the modern manufacturing industry needs to detect workpieces, which are generally divided into the above three categories: box type, complex geometry type and free-form surface type.

The so-called box type workpiece refers to the geometric workpiece composed of basic geometric elements (point, line, surface, circle, cylinder, cone and sphere), including gear box workpiece, engine box, machine tool parts or stamping die, mold and glass shell component composed of simple free-form surface. When this kind of workpiece detection is completed, the geometric dimension of the workpiece must strictly conform to the drawing or design requirements. Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) collects the geometric data of workpiece to determine the corresponding position, shape, size, feature location and relevant matching size. Therefore, it can reflect the different geometric dimensions and shapes and their mutual cooperation, which requires the measuring machine to have good flexibility, accuracy, speed and ease of use. An important feature of CMM is that it can measure various shapes and sizes of workpieces with good reliability and high speed. Therefore, CMM plays an important role in size verification and production quality control.

The workpiece corresponding to box type is one with complex geometry. This kind of workpiece is mainly composed of complex curves and curved surfaces with clear mathematical definition, such as various gears, gear processing tools, camshaft, rotor parts of twin screw compressor, worm gear, stepping gear, etc. For the workpiece with complex geometry, there are many specific measurement technologies, such as scanning measuring machine, multi probe scanning measuring machine, etc. Using high-precision scanning technology, these systems can compare and optimize the contour and contour of the detected workpiece with the original CAD model to determine the deviation. The special application software module of CMM can complete the evaluation of various complex shapes and analysis through accurate software algorithm.

Due to the wide application of computer aided design technology and the appearance of five axis CNC milling machine, especially the rapid development in automobile and mold industry, the processing problems of complex workpiece with contour and free-form surface shape have been overcome, accompanied by a large number of design and reference. This phenomenon occurs in various stamping dies, casting molds, die castings, plastic molds and some household appliances, such as telephones and computer keyboards. Or some large freeform surfaces, such as body, aircraft parts, and hull.

Different from the measurement of box-shaped workpiece, the shape, size and position between the features of box-shaped workpiece can only be accurately determined by collecting a limited number of points, which can define the regular shape; however, the free-form surface needs to collect a large number of surface point data to determine its shape. In the case of free-form surface measurement, scanning can be called a good way to measure a large number of points from 010 to 10007 and define the size, shape and position accurately at the same time.

The CMM equipped with analog scanning probe can carry out continuous scanning measurement and feed back a large number of measurement data to the computer for processing. Scanning is usually divided into two modes: open-loop and closed-loop. The open-loop scanning is performed on the workpiece whose shape has been predicted. In this case, the probe can always touch the workpiece and measure along the predetermined path. The control software calculates the deviation between the large amount of data collected and the theoretical data. The comparison of "work in process" and "design product" results can be displayed in various graphic formats for easy understanding. Open loop scanning is characterized by high speed. Closed loop scanning is a high-precision technology, especially suitable for digitizing complex contour shapes, such as molds, and some workpieces with relatively complex, small features and 3D free-form surfaces. Some specific scanning measurement software allows customers to select the area to be scanned on the computer screen, and can automatically generate a complete workpiece detection program according to the preset scanning strategy, so as to optimize the scanning path and avoid obstacles. The generation of digital point cloud can not only be downloaded to the CAD / CAM workstation for comparison with the nominal value, but also be compared with the powerful CAD function and analysis of the measuring machine software.

Sheet metal parts are more and more measured parts, which are mainly used in body manufacturing. We know that the composition of the body is a multi-level classification system: first, the sheet metal parts are connected into sub components, and then the sub components become the parts to be assembled in the next step. The final quality of the body will be accumulated through the assembly process at each stage.
